The photo that I used as a reference for this painting shows portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa consoling an elderly woman during a visit to Santa Comba (Viseu) on Oct. 19, 2017, after she had lost everything for the fires, two days earlier.

Hundreds of fires raged across the country's northern and central regions this week following the driest summer in nearly 90 years, Reuters reports. At least 41 people were killed; thousands of firefighters were dispatched to bring the blazes under control.

This painting is, undoubtely, the most striking I have ever done. Me and my family were directly highly affected with this fire so, when I saw this amazing photo, I immediatly decided that this would be my next painting.

This was the first portrait I made on a 100x70cm paper so it represented an extra hurdle. At the end, I think I consider mission complete and it prompted me to keep this size and embrace it as a bigger challenge.

This amazing photo was captured by portuguese photojournalist Nuno Andre Ferreira for LUSA.
